4th Generation Success

Most family businesses know how hard it is to get beyond the second and third generations - and there are plenty of sad statistics to back that up.

Not so for New South Wales family business Three Threes Condiments, which has survived a world war, recessions and the challenges of multi-national competitors, to thrive into its 86 th year and well into its fourth generation.

Current marketing manager Michael McApline hopes the line won't end there.

The company began when founder Stanley Roy McAlpine and his wife Winifred started making jams, sauces and pickles - selling their wares around the streets of Sydney from a horse and cart.

The business is a lot different these days, competing with multinationals and supplying Australia-wide through the major supermarket chains. Yet the company remains proudly Australian, which Michael McAlpine believes is one of its big strengths.

He runs through the generational baton-passing with Heather Dawson, starting with Stanley McAlpine - his great grandfather.
