Little to cheer about in this year's Budget, but next year's - after an expected change of government - could be brutal.

This year's Federal Budget has been surrounded by the aura of a failed government, says Business Essentials resident economist Professor Neville Norman, and that will turn a moderately expansionary blueprint into a negative one for business people and the rest of the electorate. The refusal to acknowledge sooner that a return to surplus in the coming financial year was a dream has done more damage to confidence. But Professor Norman believes a coalition government may move too quickly to get back in the black. The result could be a brutal budget in 2014.
