The recent collapse of iconic confectionery business Darrell Lea would have come as a shock to many of us who grew up with their retail presence and their products. So what went wrong? David Henderson of ROCG says it probably had a lot to do with expanding into too many unprofitable outlets at a time when supermarkets were moving into the market, and failing to take action when the danger signs became apparent. It's important, he says, that mission and value statements are more than window-dressing: they must be constant reminders to take action to ensure the business survives and prospers in changing times.
