Don't steer clear of small business bookwork - there are business benefits in taking it on

There are plenty of misconceptions around the area of small business bookwork, says BankLink's John Dunkerley. For example, that your clients don't believe you can help them by doing the work economically; or maybe you don't want the work because there's isn't enough margin to make it worthwhile. But John Dunkerley suggests there are great opportunities for those who work directly with their small business clients on lower-level accounting work. And new technologies can assist significantly in the process. Start doing more of the basic stuff, John says, and you'll help cement relationships with your clients. Don't forget, he says, that small businesses are made up of people who'll need tax planning, establishment of SMSFs etc. Providing lower-level work will put you in a much better position to handle value-added services when they arise.
