Australia's banking system has held up well, but that doesn't mean we're immune from tighter global regulations.

The Australian banking industry remains in better shape than many of its counterparts elsewhere, but won't escape the effects of tightening regulations in the global system. That, says Michael Lawrence, Managing Director of AMP Bank, will put greater pressure on bank profit margins because of requirements for greater liquidity and higher capital reserves. But,in funding terms, Australian banks have never been in better shape and should continue to do well.

He expects the residential housing market to remain relatively stable because of demand and supply issues, but - while bank lending standards have not deteriorated since the GFC -they'll be more selective with their credit policies. Customers, though, can expect high deposit rates and relatively low lending rates to continue.
