Tax agents services regime

The Tax Agents Services Act will change the relationship between tax agents and their clients and agents must be aware of the new requirements.

The legislation brings in a Code of Professional Conduct for tax and BAS agents, advises Peter McGinty, Tax Training Specialist with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Sanctions can be imposed for breaches of the Code of Conduct but Peter McGinty says that accountants working under professional guidelines have little to worry about. He says the new rules have the potential to increase paper work between agents and their clients, although the full extent is not known yet.
