Promoting To Positions Of Incompetence

Listen to a Preview

Running Time: 6:49

Date: 01/10/2012

Your newly promoted manager can't cope - and who's fault is that?

What criteria do we use to promote people in our businesses? If we've ever promoted someone to a position of incompentence - when they're clearly in over their heads and unable to cope -then the chances are our criteria is all wrong, despite the best of intentions.

Tom Harbottle has seen it all in his long training and consulting career. He tells us where we go wrong - and yes, we need to take responsibility when the situation lurches from awkward, to dangerous, to very expensive; he gives us his frank views on how to address the problem when it happens; and Tom also advises us on the right way to approach promoting staff - just to make sure we won't fall into the same trap twice.
