Who would think that Charlie Sheen could tell us a thing or two about promoting a brand? But his mad slogans have powerful business lessons for us all...

Not everyone would consider US actor Charlie Sheen a business guru. But he has one powerful business message: the commercial value of trademarking slogans. Charlie has done just this with with his catchy one-liners like "Violent torpedo of truth!" or "Adonis DNA" which he has moved to register as trademarks for promotional use on T-shirts and mugs. We could all follow Charlie's example and make money from creating memorable slogans for our own brands, says Theodore Doucas of online trademark consultancy Trademark Zone.Think about Nike's "Just Do It" slogan to understand the power of slogans to support a brand. Theodore offers wise advice on choosing the right name for your business. Too quirky, he says, may not suit the industry you're in; too boring and you'll be lost in the crowd. Look for a name that stands for something, and is memorable, and you're on the right track. And then, make sure you register the name, or the slogan, to protect it from competitors. Your valuable intellectual property is at stake.
