The slump continues and there are still dark times ahead, but a few glimmers of light are piercing the gloom.

Economic activity remains subdued and the Australian economy may slip into a mild recession, but Professor Neville Norman of Melbourne University says his December forecast of an uplift late in the year or early in 2010 remains on track. There have already been some small encouraging signs. Business owners and managers need to keep price discounting at sensible levels, and make organisational changes while they can. This year's Federal Budget will be the most significant ever.
